  • Description: A film based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, Zorba the Greek. An English author, Basil, arrives in a small Cretan village for the purpose of opening and re-operating some long-abandoned lignite mines which he inherited from his Greek father. Sailing from Piraeus to Crete, he meets on the ship a lively and outgoing guy, Alexis Zorba, whom he hires as a driver as well as the foreman for the mines. The work starts under difficult conditions and ends in complete failure, while Basil’s affair with a beautiful widow ends in tragedy – with the villagers killing her for reasons of “honor”. Despite all that, Basil realizes, through Alexis Zorba, the deeper meaning of life as well as the unique behavior of modern Greeks.
